In May 2009, a federal judge ruled that “LifeLock has engaged in an unfair business practice...”. They did this by “placing fraud alerts on behalf of consumers” and was subsequently ordered by the Court not to do so in the future. The Court stated that the company's actions “offends a public policy established by the Fair Credit Reporting Act”. Why is this important to you? Because consumers like you benefit when companies follow the Fair Credit Reporting Act since it was written to protect your credit rights.

Did you know that you could have easily set your own fraud alert in less than 3 minutes? LifeLock was charging you a monthly fee to do that for you. Since they are not doing that anymore, do you know what they are providing you?

Attention LifeLock Members: You should be aware of several things:
  • Dispute Capabilities: If you receive inaccurate information from LifeLock's alerts, do you know who to call to dispute the discrepancies? With ProtectMyID.com you'll know how. You have the right to dispute inaccurate information on your credit report with Experian.
  • Unknown: LifeLock switched to an alternate method to attempt to protect their members' identity as a result of the Court Order. This alternate method uses techniques that are not fully disclosed. Do you know exactly how the company is protecting your identity?
  • Comprehensiveness: LifeLock's own website states that “not all merchants participate…within our network.” Therefore, it is possible that a lender can extend credit under your name to someone who is trying to steal your identity, and you would not be notified of it. Is this what you're paying for?
